A lot of wind sprints, calisthenics and tequila shots.

Do you have any memorable experiences from past Lollapaloozas?
Last year we were spectators and we remember dreaming of one day being able to play Lollapalooza ourselves. By some major oversight or mixup, here we are playing the main stage! Surely someone got fired over this.

The first is by Only Children, a Chicago DJ/producer collective consisting of DJ Bald Eagle, Mister Wolf, Dinoscopy, and McCrae Reed of Gray Area. it's got the punk-funk DFA sound with some acidy squelches. download here

The second is by Chicago mash-up kings The Hood Internet, combining CDG with Beyond The Wizard Sleeve's remix of Texas indie rockers Midlake. Last but not least, John Hilmes, aka Gingerking, sent us a Cold Dust Girl remix that also strikes a chiller vibe, definitely more for lounging with friends than elbowing your way to the front of the bar for a Red Bull Vodka. Sounds kinda like Motorbass or early Royksopp. Kyle from Hot Biscuits beat us to posting it by a long shot, but you can check it out here.

Montreal

Last night we played Club Soda in Montreal. Can't say enough good things about this venue and the crowd. Despite myriad technical issues -- for instance...my main keyboard, which is 24 years old just like me, is now demapped and deceased -- we got an unbelievable response and sold an improbable number of CDs.

Overall it's been amazing touring with the Sounds. Whether at home or on the road with Lupe, many if not most of our shows in the past year have been with hip-hop artists or electro producers/DJs. We've always wanted to tour with an rock band that brings as much energy to their shows as the Sounds and so far it's been going great. Jesper, Maja, Felix, Fredrik and Johan are all really sweet people, and stay tuned for a Hey Champ remix of the Sounds!

Boston

We kicked off our tour Monday night in Boston at T.T. The Bear's. This is supposedly the smallest club we'll be playing with the Sounds. The club was packed, sweaty and crazed. I got to see one of my best friends from home regulate a fight between 4 girls who were kicking, screaming and digging their heels into each other outside the restroom. Typical Boston behavior I assume. I don't know if this had anything to do with our show or the Sounds', but either way...easily the highlight of the tour so far. We also got to kick it with our favorite blogger Asian Man Dan in the flesh.

NYE Performance Breakdown

Quite fittingly, we ushered in 2009 at the Congress Theater, where exactly two months earlier our journey began. It definitely allowed for a moment of reflection in the dressing room: we’ve come so far as musicians, artists, and a band in two short months. The show included Justice, So Me, Peanut Butter Wolf and several local DJ's.

The show was a smashing success…the Justice crowd was in step with everything we did, and the energy was through the roof. We actually covered a Justice song live as a sort of joke, but the crowd went berserk.

After the show we headed backstage to celebrate in our dressing room. Xav and Gaspard from Justice came down to hang out; truly classy guys with amazing taste in music. Randomly, a little over a year ago I was sitting on the floor of their apartment in Paris drinking with them, So Me, and our mutual friend the super-talented Mehdi Pinson. They were showing some vids from their tour in Australia – huge stadiums full of screaming fans. I remember thinking to myself, “I’ll never know what that feels like….” One year later here we are playing with them in front of a sea of 4200 revelers.

We eventually jumped out in the crowd and enjoyed the rest of the night, hung with friends, danced like idiots, and avoided rolling 18 year-olds trying to make out with our ears (ok, there was only one of those, but it was super gross).

While I would definitely not call ourselves a “success” yet (we have a LONG way to go), so many random things happened in 2008 that we have to be thankful for: A director in LA calls and wants to make a video for us, as we are just finishing recording this song called “Cold Dust Girl.” The video gets attention from bloggers. And just as we were at the end of our ropes, about to put down our instruments and give up, Lupe Fiasco calls. So many people believed in us and supported us and it’s truly humbling to think about. If you’re reading this, you’re definitely part of what made 2008 great for us too (even if it’s only you reading, mom).

Hey Champ and Lupe Awesome Shows, Great Job!

And now ladies and gentlemen, we have sadly reached the conclusion of our month-long tour with Lupe Fiasco and his crew. We can not thank Lupe enough for the experience. We met so many great people and played for even more. Saam managed to acquire the on-stage swagger of Pete Townsend and the fancy footwork of a certain Mr. Jackson (not bad for a Persian), while Pete exploited his newly-found rockstar status to win over those of the female population. It was a month of mornings too early and hotel debauchery too late, where airplane flights were a commonplace activity and Lupe's hip hop collided with Hey Champ's electro-pop to provide hours of rump shakin' each night. This tour will always stand as a milestone for Hey Champ.

Big ups to the University of Maryland, as it was an amazing way to cap off this last month. Though I was a little weirded-out by the noticeably high ratio of cops to students (you all must party hard), the show rocked and you all were more than welcoming. Hope to see you guys once again!

Tired as hell, freezing, and somewhat startled after a tumultuous flight from JFK, we found ourselves in Geneseo, ready to rock another college crowd. While the majority of the kids filed into Kuhl Gymnasium eager and collected, a group of students had decided it would be a good idea to engage in some good ol' college debauchery prior to their arrival. A drunken mess, one of them made friends with a trash bag and the campus police (twas a puking sesh indeed) and stalled the show for about 20 minutes. I felt bad for her as she was carried away on the stretcher, but was oddly thankful of the fact that her sacrifice allowed another few hundred to file in before we began the show ..puke-y girl, you really took one for the team!

The show went without a hitch, definitely one of our best performances musically and vocally. Saam was feeling a bit under the weather, but that seemed to be of no matter for those 30 minutes, hence his spot-on vocals, witty antics, and pelvic thrusts, guitar in-hand. Pete was being his usual synth-wizardy self, rocking the boards while jumping wildly in place, and I was just sweating my balls off behind the kit as usual. Lupe tore the roof off once again, rocking the black Hey Champ t-shirt on stage for his whole set...what a badass. Maybe that's why we sold more merch that night than any on the tour? Either way, big ups to SUNY Geneseo!

17 days, 15 planes, 7 shows, and 15,000 people. Our first tour across the country was sleepless, hilarious, mildly drunken (what else are you supposed to do all day), and the most amazing experience that Hey Champ has had to date. There were so many times when I thought "how in the hell did we all of a sudden end up in this situation?" Then I realized it didn't matter why or how. I knew that all of our hard work was finally paying off, and it could not have come quick enough. Thanks to everyone who supported us at these shows and stay tuned for the album release and more tour dates. Maryland, get ready to rock 'cuz we're coming strong. Tis all,

Days Off...

We had a few days off tour, so we got to go back to freezing Chicago. 'Days off' for us doesn't mean time to chill and sleep in- it means we're in the studio working on our album, so every day we were down at Southside Recording putting together our tracks. Lots of coffee was consumed...

Just got off the scariest, bumpiest plane ride ever on our way to Geneseo. At one point, right after takeoff from NYC, the plane was having trouble with the landing gear, and we were flying low above the water. Lu lifted up his adjacent seat cushion to use as a flotation device. I laughed out loud. And get this, Jonathan figured out that was the 13th flight we've taken this tour. Creepy...

After UConn & Traveling to Elmira

Today we're on the road to Elmira College after having a day off in CT. Granted it's cold as balls here. (and yes I know balls aren't cold, please no emails...)

The UConn show was really fun. At the end of Shake, the whole band was going full tilt, I was jumping up and down, and so was the crowd. Then the crowd went totallly bezerk, and I felt like 'whoa, they must love this!. I soon realized Lupe had come out on stage and had been jumping up and down right next to me... (damnit, it's for him....just kidding). That felt very VERY cool. We don't hang with Lupe very much on tour because he's got a million things going on, so moments like that still give me goosebumps. There were about 3500 students there, and the energy was incredible.

Near the end of Lupe's show, he called Jonathan and me on stage. He tried to get us to do the dance moves his band does. We weren't very good, and probably looked white as hell up there.

As the other guys in the band will surely tell you, I get excited about very few things. New synthesizers, perhaps. Eating shrimp, sometimes. But to leave 30 degree Chicago weather for the mid 80's of LA turns us all into giddy schoolgirls (and I mean that in every sense of the metaphor). I'm writing this on my blackberry in a tshirt and the sun is beating down on my neck. Finally, a good beating that doesn't come at the hands of Jonathan on Wii....

UCSB was a blast, we played our best show yet but were iffy on the crowd response. Lupe and the band killed as usual, i'm starting to wonder if i'll ever get tired of watching them perform. After the show, we were a bit dejected but folks started lining up to talk and the response turned out to be the best yet. Huge collective 'phew!' Our new tshirts, which looked much cooler than I thought they would, sold out.

Today we get to bum around LA and shop, although the only one buying tons of stuff is Brandon our manager. Apparently we're paying him too much.

Getting kind of excited for our show at Club Nokia downtown tomorrow, and you know, that says a lot.

Dickinson College - 11.7.08

I don't know about Saam's prognosis...I know it's only been two shows so far, but I think we'll get the hang of this college tour. Unfortunately we have to miss the Florida State show tonight, but Lupe and his band are on their way right now and needless to say they are going to kill it.

Over the past year in Chicago, I completely forgot what it was like to live in a college town and never get to see any major shows except a couple times a semester -- as was the case at Dickinson, where we played last night. In Chi there are at least a dozen shows every month I'd like to see, and on a good month I'll see half that many.

Dickinson is definitely one of the smallest schools we are going to play on this tour, but you wouldn't know it from the energy in their theatre last night. I still can't believe people were jumping up and down and crowd-surfing from the beginning of our show -- at 8pm no less...TWO HOURS before Lupe! -- fortunately B Smiff has photographic evidence.

Dickinson is officially the shit, the ladies were loving them some
Pete and Hey Champ. The show was cracking as soon as they stepped on
stage. Shout out to the Knux who killed their set as well, we'll see
you fellas in L.A. After the show we decided to go to Alibies, a local
bar where everyone was extremely appreciative for our killer
performance. We ended up staying out roaming the bustling streets of
Carlisle until 4am and then retired to our suites at the Hampton Inn.

The first night went great. Started out kind of raw. Really annoying soundcheck, and we had been up traveling since 3AM.

Our first number was met with the puzzled faces that i'm guessing should be expected for an electro pop act opening for Lupe. But afterwards there were a lot of people wanting outside backstage to take pictures with us. That's definitely new, kind of a first 'rockstar' moment. People told us they were really pleasantly surprised with our music, and I'd be lying if I said that's not awesome to hear.

After Lupe's set we all headed back to the hotel, then the Hey Champ crew changed and left to do a DJ set at a club. Surprisingly fun. Rolled back in to the hotel at 2:30 AM. Left for our flight to Pennsylvania at 4 AM. This is gonna get ugly...

Halloween Show Wrap-Up

There's nothing worse than waiting. Standing in a cramped hallway leading to the stage, the three of us were fidgeting like mad and being generally uneasy. We've done this a hundred times before, we've played these songs before, i'll just walk out, say something dumb in the mic, and pick up my guitar while Jonathan gets situated with his drums and Pete fires up his synths. We shouldn't be nervous, we weren't nervous at CMJ...but this is 4000 people! I was stoked when we got to play for 100 people....but 4000?

We didn't want to sit any longer in the dressing room, it was really isolated and we wanted to take all of this in. But at that moment, it didn't feel invigorating or like some kind of high...it was plain nerves. We had been waiting there 10 excruciating minutes, after waiting all day to sound check, after waiting all week to play. Rock n' Roll involves a lot of waiting. I mean, Jonathan and I played our first show as kids 13 years ago...we waited a long time to get here. What's another 5 minutes?

Finally, the stage manager gave us the signal and we were led out to the stage. Just picking up our instruments helped out a lot. As corny as this may sound, our instruments are probably the most constant thing we have in our lives right now. Everything is changing. And then show began. We did what we love to do. And there was music. And there were lights. And there were a LOT of people. It's probably a good thing I had a spotlight in my face and couldn't see them all.

And we think the crowd really dug it, which is as much a testament to Lupe as it is to us.
